The Madonnelle Project
Fascinated by the intersection of the sacred with the everyday, I’ve set out to photograph the Tabernacles of Florence, Italy. Originally these street shrines, some dating from as early as the 1200’s, contained lanterns to light the narrow lanes for the citizenry. These “Madonelle” with their images of the Virgin Mary served to bestow blessings on passerby. Centuries later they survive in close proximity to pizza joints and newsstands. It is capturing the visual play between the sacred and mundane that delights me.
